Military Veterans

There are over 7500 military veterans residing in Tameside and our aim is to engage with as many as possible, working in partnership with other organizations to deliver services that will contribute to decreasing social exclusion, social isolation and loneliness whilst enhancing community cohesion and encouraging participation to increase mental and physical wellbeing in our community.

Multi-Sports Project

Our multi-sports project is funded by the Covenant Fund and is aimed at getting military veterans not only active physically, but also to get them actively involved in one of the four sports we have on offer.  The project introduces four different sporting disciplines; Climbing, Table Tennis, Yoga, and Archery.  Each discipline has 12 weeks of free coaching for up to 15 military veterans on each cohort.  On completion of the 12 weeks, the veterans have the opportunity to participate in the coaching qualifications of each discipline – gaining them certificates that can be used for further learning or employability.

The climbing course has come to an end and we are now hopeful that 3 veterans will continue with learning their coaching instructors course after we had 16 registered participants on the 12-week course.  Moving Forces have now continued the offer of regular climbing sessions at Manchester Climbing Centre which is great news for those participants.

Our Table Tennis course has also come to an end and unfortunately, we only had 8 registered with an average of 4 attendings and none going on to complete instructors qualifications.

We now have yoga on a Friday night and Archery on a Monday evening. Both of these sessions are free to attend so please contact the foundation for more information.

Military Veterans Football Team

Our football team trains each Friday at the Tameside Stadium from 1800-1900. We encourage as many military veterans to come along and enjoy football training with a qualified coach from the football club.  We have been part of the North West Military Veterans pilot league which included like-minded clubs from Liverpool FC, Everton FC, Fleetwood FC, Manchester City FC, Burnley FC, Wigan Athletic FC, and Preston North End FC.

We organize a remembrance event to coincide with Armistice Day each year as well as regular friendly matches throughout the calendar year.

The team are sponsored by Ashton under Lyne branch of The Royal British Legion

Horticulture Project

Delivered by local Green Councillor Lee Huntbach, who has volunteered with us for the past year, this is an accredited (Open Awards Level 1 Certificate in Horticulture Skills) learning program for military veterans and other adults across our community.

The group met each Tuesday from 1000-1400 at DB Garden Nurseries in Hyde. They are in the process of having all the work externally verified by Open Awards and we will then host a celebration event that will coincide with a Curzon Ashton home game so the learners are presented with their certificates.

We are also looking to identify funding to allow us to open this learning up to a new cohort so please keep an eye out here for more information.
